Stephen Knight
Board
Stephen has been involved in the Recreational Boating fraternity across a multitude of positions and appointments, for over 30 years. Strangely enough it was PWC that started it all, in 1999 he was elected as the President of Jet Sport West Boating Assoc after serving on the Committee for a number of years, the organisation went from strength to strength, and during that time on the Committee, Stephen became the main conduit to the organisation with DoT, and was able to negotiate fresh PWC freestyle areas, the largest being Mangles Bay, he was also instrumental in bring the Courtesy Patrol concept to WA, a concept that he witnessed over east, the operation was staffed by volunteers from Mindarie to Bunbury, He was a part of the contingent supporters of Oztrek2000 on behalf of WA. He was also a Boat Smart Instructor, having passed his Recreational Instructor ticket from DoT way back.
Stephen was appointed to the State Boating Council, (SBC) at its inception and sat on the Board till its closure some 12 or so years later. He was elected by his peers on Council to represent the SBC at the RBFS, which he sat on for some 24 years, allocating valuable government funds to recreational infrastructure and long-term projects.
Stephen is a long-term member of the Cockburn Power Boats club and has sat on the Management Committee for some 10 years including times as Second Rear and First Rear Commodore, he became Commodore in 2023, retiring in 2025. Stephen was appointed to the Cockburn Sound Management Council for several years, and also appointed prior to the Westport External Reference Task Force, as a recreational boating representative.
Stephen currently sits as Patron for a Veterans Ex Service Organisation, SailingOn WA which operates out of several yacht clubs in WA, although he is quick to point out, he knows little about sailing.
Stephen’s personal life starting in boating probably at age 6 of Dide Bay north of Lancelin, and over many fishing trips in the 70’s to places like Shark Bay and later Exmouth and our north, he spent much of his youth boating around Cockburn Sound and places like Rockingham, Stephen honed his fishing skills and placed fishing as his main hobby, having landed a marlin and a host of demersal fish over his life, he still has a few left on the catch list that he hasn’t tackled with yet. He was an avid past scuba diver and later turned his hand to spear fishing and free diving, however is now in a slower pace environment.
Personally, Stephen has Rec. boated over quite a number of regions in WA, including the Busselton-Dunsborough regions, Abrolhos, Shark Bay, Carnarvon, Exmouth Gulf, Pilbara Islands, and the Monties. He is a long-term member of GIFFA. and a past mooring holder.
